2020 was the year of running for many of us. New sneakers followed the same trend, featuring more breathable parts, aerodynamic shapes and utilising suspension technologies then ever before. The running trend took the fashion industry by storm, and thanks to that, we can put on some of the best retro futuristic models such as the Asics Gel-Kayano 14, which is currently being released after 13 years.
In 2008, when the 14th model from the successful Gel-Kayano series was introduced, running magazine Runner’s World named it the shoe of the year. The sneaker’s popularity immediately rose, and not just among runners, thanks to both the technical aspects and the design.
INSPIRED BY ACTION
The iconic look of the Asics Gel-Kayano 14 was taken care of by the father of the series, Toshikazu Kayano, who later passed his legacy to Hidenori Yamashita – and it was Hidenori who redesigned the sneaker for its current re-release. The inspiration for the updated version of the sneaker was “flash”: “‘Flash’ for me references that burst of action where the runner lands at the heel and pushes away at the toes. Whether it’s the color, the lines, the materials, the silhouette, or the texture — all aspects of the GEL-KAYANO 14 are designed with that idea of ‘flash’ in mind.”
It’s apparent that now, sneakers like the Gel-Kayano 14 are an irreplaceable part of fashion and can be combined with a plethora of outfits, as showcased by our editorial.
