Besides constantly innovating and working on new silhouettes, Nike also spends time refurbishing retro silhouettes to fit 2021’s futuristic look.A symbol of this school of thought is the Nike Waffle One, which combines elements of recent successful collaborations and executes them in an all-round, everyday summer sneaker.
The Waffle One is the definition of a timeless classic. It balances modern tendencies with tried and tested elements of the cult runner model Nike Waffle Trainer. A lot of time passed since 1976, when Bill Bowerman’s silhouette was first released, and some parts of the sneaker required an update – for example, the foam in the midsole is now softer and can more effectively absorb impacts, and the TPU-reinforced heel gives the model a more sporty and dynamic vibe.
When looking at the sneakers, the first things that come to mind are Nike’s successful collaborations with Japanese brands. Signs of inspiration from collabs with Sacai or Undercover are given away by elements like the segmented heel and the sides of the silhouette, which are covered by a mesh and velvet which gives the sneakers the ability to firmly keep their shape, even in high-intensity conditions.
I’ll be honest with you, the Nike Waffle One’s predicted hype, mainly due to the model’s similarities to all the collabs, failed to deliver. However, they can check off an altogether different, and more important factor. They bring fresh wind into the sneaker game thanks to a great combination of performance and a modern look. So, for a very reasonable price, you can enjoy a great pair of everyday sneakers that definitely won’t be overlooked on the streets.
If I had to compare the Nike Waffle One’s to something in real life, it wouldn’t be the Instagram model with hundreds of thousands of likes, but the honest, down to earth girl next door that has much more to offer in the end.
