At times, it may seem like the world of sneakers is constantly bobbing back and forth purely between retro and futuristic designs. Almost as if there wasn’t a contemporary style, to put it loosely. But then, along comes someone like Craig Green, the best fashion designer in the U.K., and makes a clear statement as to what living in the present means.  This is the result of the latest collaboration between adidas and Craig Green.

The collection is composed of two almost identical silhouettes, the ZX 2k Phormar and the ZX 2k Phormar II. At first glance, they might seem to be one and the same, but when you take a closer look at them side by side, the subtle differences, such as the minimalistic branding and transparent upper layer, really pop out.

In my opinion, what really makes the whole collection so anchored in the present is the tongue, which starts almost at toe level, and is ended by a lacing system that fits perfectly into today’s techwear wave. One of the biggest selling points of 2021 is comfort, which is supplied by a strong Boost layer in the midsole, along with other useful elements, such as the firm heel tab, which unites the whole model from tip to heel.

The prototype of this sneaker debuted as part of Green’s 2020 fall/winter collection. According to his own words, the visual result is primarily based on functionality, which corresponds to adidas’ plan for the future years. “I like that the collection is both futuristic and minimalistic at the same time. I stand by the statement that the best construction details are always simple and functional. The reasons why we chose this shape for the ZX 2k Phormor are mainly the laces and stitched panels, which we wanted to use from the start. At the same time, both of them fulfill their aesthetic and functional purpose,” Green describes the result of their collaboration.

The iconic designer’s words don’t exactly fit what I’ve been trying to say. While I’m trying to talk about the collection as very contemporary, Craig Green describes it only as futuristic. But that’s just a question of narrative. Either way, that’s what makes this collaboration so great. Everyone can have their own personal viewpoint and no one has to be wrong.
